Turn-taking in Mandarin Dialogue: Interactions of Tone and Intonation

چکیده

Fluent dialogue requires that speakers successfully negotiate and signal turn-taking. While many cues to turn change have been proposed, especially in multi-modal frameworks, here we focus on the use of prosodic cues to these functions. In particular, we consider the use of prosodic cues in a tone language, Mandarin Chinese, where variations in pitch height and slope additionally serve to determine word meaning. Within a corpus of spontaneous Chinese dialogues, we find that turn-unit final syllables are significantly lower in average pitch and intensity than turnunit initial syllables in both smooth turn changes and segments ended by speaker overlap. Interruptions are characterized by significant prosodic differences from smooth turn initiations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these contrasts correspond to an overall lowering across all tones in final position, which largely preserves the relative heights of the lexical tones. In classification tasks, we contrast the use of text and prosodic features. Finally, we demonstrate that, on balanced training and test sets, we can distinguish turnunit final words from other words at ≈ 93% accuracy and interruptions from smooth turn unit initiations at 62% accuracy.

Perception of intonation in Mandarin Chinese.

There is a tendency across languages to use a rising pitch contour to convey question intonation and a falling pitch contour to convey a statement. In a lexical tone language such as Mandarin Chinese, rising and falling pitch contours are also used to differentiate lexical meaning. How, then, does the multiplexing of the F(0) channel affect the perception of question and statement intonation in...

Interactions of Tone and Intonation in Whispered Mandarin

A previous study has found that whispered Mandarin, though still allowing listeners to perceive tones to a certain degree, does not carry acoustic cues that are special to whispered tones. That conclusion, however, was based on data from only one speaker. The present study attempted to verify the earlier finding with data from more speakers, with an additional goal to find out if there are acou...

Cross-linguistic Perception of Intonation by Mandarin and Cantonese Listeners

The question intonation patterns of Mandarin and Cantonese are distinctive. While Mandarin relies on the global F0 contour, Cantonese depends on a boundary tone. A crosslinguistic perception test was conducted with Mandarin and Cantonese listeners to investigate their use of pitch in identifying intonation patterns in familiar and unfamiliar languages. Forced identification tasks were used. The...

Mandarin Conversation: Turn-taking Cues in Exchange Structure

This study addresses turn taking in everyday Mandarin conversation from a phonetic perspective, in particular, suprasegmental analysis. The acoustic data are based on 103 exchanges from two conversations – one structured and one free. The results show that turn final cues are mostly signaled via various falling intonation patterns in Mandarin conversation. Some anomalies exist and these are ana...

Prosodic modeling for improved speech recognition and understanding

The general goal of this thesis is to model the prosodic aspects of speech to improve humancomputer dialogue systems. Towards this goal, we investigate a variety of ways of utilizing prosodic information to enhance speech recognition and understanding performance, and address some issues and difficulties in modeling speech prosody during this process. We explore prosodic modeling in two languag...
